“If you don’t like this book because of the paranormal aspect of it, then you’re going to love it because of Harry.”
~ Under the Covers

I am most likely the last person in the world to read this series but when I was looking for a new UF series to try, I remembered this one because it’s been in my TBR pile for years.

I can see why this series is so vastly popular and well-loved. Butcher’s voice is strong right from the get-go and there’s little time wasted on the boring bits before Harry has a new case. There is a lot to love about Harry Dresden. He’s got a friendly demeanor that immediately makes you like him and there’s also the fact that he’s got a sense of humor unlike any other. If you don’t like this book because of the paranormal aspect of it, then you’re going to love it because of Harry. He’s the thing that carries this book and I’ve got to say, I can now see why he’s such a known entity when it comes to the genre.

Despite the fact that this book was written and released a few years back and I only read it recently, the stories are fresh and unique and that’s saying something because I’ve read quite a lot of UF in my time. That it still manages to be considered as something special truly shows just how unique this book is. I’m definitely looking forward to reading the rest of the series!

  1. Dresden Files are all on my keeper shelf. I even have the HTF Backup short. Still watch my DVD of it too. Hate that it was cancelled so quickly.

  2. Nice review and you are so right – ” If you don’t like this book because of the paranormal aspect of it, then you’re going to love it because of Harry.” The only thing better than reading this series is listening to James Marters reading it. *sigh* Magic. Thank you for the reminder that I need to read/listen to this again.

    1. You are the second person who has raved about James. I think after I finish the series I’m listening to on audio, I will give this one a go. I love reading the books because I’m quicker that way, but everyone seems to love this narrator so must be worth it!

  3. I love this series my brother introduced it to me and I actually passed him up reading them so fast. I kept wanting to tell him something about a different book and he kept screaming SPOILERS!!

  4. I kept reading about the popularity of this series too, but was daunted by the number of books already in the series. Due to Audio month, I’ve caught up with some of my UF books by listening to them in audio. Just last week, I finished Storm Front in audio. James Marsters is fabulous. Yesterday, I checked out the second book in audio from the library and look forward to more of Harry’s adventures.

    1. Gah! Another person who loves the audio. Okay, this seals it. I’ll be listening to the next one instead of reading. Thank you guys for letting me know how great the audio is otherwise I would never had known!

  5. I’ve also heard good things about this series, but it is so big and my TBR shelf is already groaning. Can you tell me if there are any smexy times at all in this series? Any romantic elements at all? I understand that it’s UF, but as in Kelley Armstrong’s UF Otherworld series , there are the occasional smexy times that keep me interested, lol.

      1. So no romance or sex in the first book I’m guessing? Strictly a…what sub-genre would that be, UF sans anything smexy? Action, maybe? AUF? Or mystery, MUF? Lol!

  6. This is one of my favorite series! My friends and I have always said that this could have been Harry Potter, if he never went to Hogwarts, and got picked up by a crazy, evil Dumbledore-hater. LOL

  7. I’m so glad you read it! I absolutely love the Dresden Files. My top UF books are Kate Daniels, Harry Dresden and Charley Davidson. I think every UF fan needs to read these 3 series.

  8. Im so addicted to this series ….Only downfall for being a Butcher fan…..there’s a long wait in between releases.
