~ Under the Covers

I’ve been a fan of Jill Shalvis for some time now and have literally read every single book of hers. Her Heartbreaker Bay series for me has been a mix of good and bad. Some books really impress me with its charm and sexy style whereas some books don’t quite hit home for me. PLAYING FOR KEEPS is one of those books unfortunately.

I really wanted to like it, but there was something off about the heroine that didn’t quite make me fall in love with her. Alone, Sadie does not have the usual spark to her. Her internal conflicts were there, but never really carried out and I thought she acted very differently alone than when she was with the hero, Caleb. So it just felt a bit odd to me sometimes.

I really liked the presence of the dog in this book. It was a nice touch to bring them together, but also create a sense of warmth in the series. If you know me, then you know I love dogs, so this was really perfect timing.

I’m hoping Shalvis’ future books work for me. I really love her Lucky Harbor series, but have yet to find something that she has written that is even better. Hopefully, that book/series will come soon.

  1. I’ve actually seen a lot of love for this book so it’s refreshing to see that it isn’t perfect lol I actually own the first four books in this series but have never read them!

  2. Interesting about something being off about the heroine. Most of the reviews I’ve read show a love for the story, but there is always at least a little remark about not caring for her as much as the dog and the hero.
I do want to read this series at some point.
    Enjoyed your review, Anne!
