Jess Davis is a devoted single mother to seven-year-old Juno. Her grandparents, who raised her when her own mother became too unreliable in her childhood, are also now helping raise her daughter. Jess is a freelance data analyst. Her entire life is lived in a four block radius. That radius includes a coffee shop where she and her best friend, Fizzy, go to work. For years, Jess has been eyeing up the hot man they call Americano, until a rumor about his line of work has her stopping him one day in the shop. See, Dr. River Peña has created an app to help people find their soulmates based entirely in their DNA. As a lark, Jess sends in her sample. But when her results come in with an insanely high match to none other than Americano himself, a man Jess isn’t even sure she likes all that much, her life gets turned upside down. Since Juno was born, she hasn’t wanted or felt like she needed love in her life, but she finds it hard to believe the numbers because her and River’s match are lying, and she also finds herself more drawn to him the more time they spend together. Is it possible that numbers truly led her to her soulmate?
I was actually pleasantly surprised by this one. After how horrible 𝐼𝓃 𝒶 𝐻𝑜𝓁𝒾𝒹𝒶𝓏𝑒 was, I’ll admit I didn’t have high hopes. But it ended up being all of the best parts of what I’ve come to expect from CLo, though I wish there had been more smut.
I can identify with Jess’s skepticism. Though I don’t have the whole single motherhood thing to point to as an excuse, dating in today’s day and age – when there’s all of these apps and literally no one wants to connect the old fashioned, organic way – is next to impossible and generally exhausting. I can understand just not having it in you to put yourself out there.
The scientific stuff, while I understand is super important to the story, unfortunately tended to be really distracting. I often found myself skipping over it. To be fair, lay-people aren’t going to understand half of what’s happening. I consider myself to be fairly intelligent and I was LOST. I think CLo took some liberties with that hoping it would land and I just didn’t feel like it did.

I read them and have enjoyed many of, but certainly not all, of their books. I’ve found I have to be very selective with their books. This is not to criticize them, it’s simply my reaction to some of their books.

I loved reading this one so much! Their banter was perfect. River was my perfect character and I really related to Jess. This is one I would reread and that list is not very long.
