THE IMMORTAL CROWN is the second book in Richelle Mead’s latest adult urban fantasy series, Age of X, and she’s kicking things into higher gear. Although I have to admit that the beginning of this book took me a bit to get into, after I hit the halfway point I was fully committed to this story. I found myself experiencing the same with book one, but then again, it could just be my faulty memory on things that had happened that kept jarring me out of the flow.
Nevertheless, the adventure that Mae and Justin are in just keeps delving deeper into the religious subcultures and testing their own boundaries with what they believe is right and wrong. Even crossing some of those lines and allegiances. Seems like both Justin and Mae had their own agendas to deal with at certain point in this story. And that made the whole story more interesting.
THE IMMORTAL CROWN is definitely a bit edgier, going into voodoo practices and traveling even to neighboring Arcadia, a land where religion trumps science. But even that religion and belief in the wrong Gods can destroy the masses.
Aside from the religious and political aspects of their trip to Arcadia as part of a peace campaign for Lucien, Mae has an abducted niece to rescue in Arcadia. And Justin has to do the impossible to get them out of Arcadia alive while trying to save their own homes from being targeted by Arcadian forces. Have I mentioned that I think Justin is the coolest? Well, yeah, he sort of comes to save the day. When he can. He’s such a flawed hero but one who tries hard at being good and doing the right thing. Staying away from the woman he wants for the greater good.
As much as I get all the reasons keeping Mae and Justin apart, I can’t wait to see them throw those reasons to the curb and go for it. The sizzling sexual tension they are accumulating is starting to build anxiety in me!
And just as much as I love our main characters, I have a passion for the side characters. Especially Tessa. She plays a prominent part as a side character in this book and she makes mistakes, just as she rectifies them. She’s another flawed character that is growing in a new world. She doesn’t know the workings of this society she’s thrown to live in. But she’s definitely gearing up to kick some ass.
Richelle Mead is and effortless storyteller and this book shows it. The magical way she has of depicting a world that will leave you feeling transported to another time and place. And the way she narrates a story, interweaving everything she puts on the page, with such attention to detail, is mesmerizing. I feel like THE IMMORTAL CROWN is setting in motion greater things to come in this series! I can’t wait to see all hell break loose! Greater excitement and characters you can’t help to fall in love with! Definitely one of my favorite books by Richelle Mead in a while.

Great review.. This series is so frustrating to me, lol. I both love it and times want to throw the book. Love all the characters but sometimes want to knock them upside the head. I do love the sexual tension and can’t wait till it finally explodes, should be a great scene. 🙂
