“Something about it didn’t get me all the way as I was expecting by the raving reviews.”
~ Under the Covers

I’ve had my eye on this book since it released.  I know this is part of a series, but I had several people tell me I could read as a standalone and decided it would be my first attempt at reading Talia Hibbert.

First, yes this can be read as a complete standalone.  I’m not sure exactly how it ties into the other books in this series but I didn’t miss a thing while reading this.  Was this my best choice as a first book by this author?  I don’t think so.  This is Ms. Hibbert’s first m/m romance and it’s also an angsty story.  Something about it didn’t get me all the way as I was expecting by the raving reviews.  So will I try another book by this author? Absolutely!

Back to this book.  A grumpy farmer and a depressed former playboy.  This is an enemies to lovers, opposites attract, age gap, slow burn romance.  Let’s talk characters first.  Griffin was the star of the show for me.  The gentle giant!  He’s the outcast in this small town and my heart went out to him from the very beginning of this story!  His confidence and how he sees himself is not the greatest when this story kicks off.  I loved his friend and support system though and was happy that was there to get him through some of his past.  But I loved seeing the change in him after he starts seeing himself how Olu does.  And how Olu’s perception of Griffin slowly changes as the story progresses.  I think Ms. Hibbert did this really well!  May I remind you this is a slow burn romance?

This book also deals with mental illness and I think it was handled really well.  We get to see the struggle and how all the best elements came together to help the healing process start.

However, the pacing could’ve been better for my taste.  I found myself losing interest several times throughout the story and wanted more to be happening and less of the day to day stuff.  That kept me from being fully engaged with this read and why my rating.  Maybe I can blame my expectations.
