ARC Review: Unbreak My Heart by Lorelei James

I have waited patiently for Boone and Sierra to get a story.  We get a few teases in the Rough Riders series about these two and I was dying to see their romance develop.  What I was a bit concerned about was the fact this would kick off a new adult spin off of the series.  Now, I do read new adult but I guess I expect a certain feel from these rough riders and I was a bit hesitant going in as to how it would work.  Especially when changing the setting.  I think UNBREAK MY HEART is a solid first installment in this new series, even though it didn’t quite take me to the heights I expected for these two.  I did miss the extended McKays, the town, the feel and the more mature characters.

But let’s talk about my favorite thing, shall we?  Boone West!  Boone is so intense he will make your toes curl.  He definitely did that for me more than once.  I was expecting that, and he exceeded my expectations.  Just.HOT!  Knowing his back story made me want to comfort him, and seeing that intense male focused on his woman was explosive.  Sierra, on the other hand, has grown into an independent and strong woman.  I was very happy to see that.  She takes charge and goes for what she wants in life.  But it did get to me at first when she was so hesitant to get over the past when Boone came back in her life.  I may have wanted to throttle her a bit, I admit.

As far as overcoming obstacles to be together, these two didn’t have it all too rough I don’t think.  It’s a second chance they have now, without a crazy amount of baggage.  Not to say there’s nothing to overcome, but I did expect a little extra from this story.  And a lot of the situations they found themselves in were fitting for their age group, but not so much catching my interest.

All that aside, I freaking loved seeing the little McKays all grown up and in college.  Kyler has always been a favorite of mine and I was so pumped to see he has a decent role in this one.  It’s only left me dying to get his book.  But all the McKay-keters are so stinking adorable, I can’t really wait to see them all get HEA’s.  I do wish that they wouldn’t all get that in college and maybe see them a bit more mature.  But that’s just me.

For fans of the series, you know this is a must read.  I don’t think I have much more to say to you than that.  But for new readers that maybe have been intimidated by the sheer number of books in the Rough Riders series (get over yourselves and read them all!!!) the author has done a really good job at adding enough back story that you won’t be missing anything if you decide to jump right in with this one.  I do have to question why you would want to do that because the Rough Riders series is by far the best western erotic romance series out there!
