ARC Review: Law of Physics 3: Time by Penny Reid

This is the concluding novella in the Law of Physics serial, that makes up the second book in the Hypothesis series. At this stage, Mona and Abram have agreed that they are going to couple up, but due to him being a rock star and her being a physics genius (…!) their schedules have them on opposite sides of the world. Can their budding relationship survive over such a long distance?

There is a lot of love for this book, all the reviews I have seen are overwhelmingly positive. A part of me gets it. A part of me also doesn’t quite understand the buzz. So, I am going to let each part of me explain their reasoning and see where I land.

In a market flooded by quickly produced flat-pack style romance; where each book is as quickly and poorly put together as a cheap MDF bookcase and lasts in you mind just as long, it’s refreshing to have a story that digs beneath the surface. Rather than having an insta-love connection which lands our cookie cutter protagonists straight in to some mediocre sex, the Laws of Physics serial gives you a thoughtful and introspective story. It builds up the characters as both individuals and in relation to their connection with one another. A consequence of this is that the relationship between Mona and Abram was intense, even though physically they are rarely together. It also does wonders in ramping up their sexual chemistry.

It felt great to have a story that dug beneath the surface and it demonstrated how wonderful the romance genre can be. It can be used as a vehicle for exploring a character’s relationships with their romantic partner, family, friends and even a tool for understanding themselves. Which, is exactly what Reid did with these books.

But, and here is where the other part of me takes over, is there such a thing as too thoughtful?

A lot of this book, and the previous two, are spent in the characters noggin’ with them pontificating on various events that have occurred and their relationships. This did enable us to be intimately familiar with both Mona and Abram in a way you rarely see in the romance genre. And maybe it’s rare for a reason. A lot of not very much happens in the course of these three books. And, there is a lot of time when the characters are on the page as individuals but not together. And…if I’m being frank I was a little bored.

This book didn’t wow me the way it has a lot of the book community. It isn’t necessarily a book I would recommend or reread. I understood and enjoyed the beauty of this simple romance where both characters were smart, kind and thoughtful folks who were working at being together. But, in a world full of over stimulation it didn’t capture and keep my attention; it just wasn’t enough for me.
