“Renee Ahdieh definitely has a way with words. ”
~ Under the Covers

So I was excited for this book after the way the first one ended and I have to say, I found it a bit less captivating than book one.  Don’t get me wrong, the writing is still beautiful and the world it transports us to is still a magical one.  But I could find myself getting a bit more distracted while reading this one.

I liked that we get a bit more in depth in the world and less in the relationship with this book.  There is an issue of a curse to break after all, and I was happy to see that take center stage here.  THE ROSE AND THE DAGGER does wrap up all threads nicely (romantic and otherwise) and I was happy to see that.  I also liked the introduction of Shazi’s sister and seeing her story develop, as well as getting to see more of some characters we came to love in the first one and how they all play their role in this one.

There is also a bigger magical element in this book and I was really happy to see that.  More intrigue, more rivalries, even war.  I wish we could’ve had these two books blend better and give us and even mix of badass and romance, instead of one focusing heavy on one thing while the other ties up all the rest of the stories.  But overall, I think this is a wonderfully plotted story that had plenty of twists and surprises up its sleeves.

Renee Ahdieh definitely has a way with words.  Her beautiful prose is really what kept me reading because in that sense it’s magical.  There is something almost poetic about it.  I enjoyed that in the first, and this one was no different.  While painting the world, she paints the emotions these characters are feeling.  And I think this is something she does well.  She is one I will be looking forward to reading more of.

  1. OOh nice! Glad that you still enjoyed this one even if it wasn’t quite as much as you had hoped! Hearing a lot of good things about this one so I can’t wait to actually read it as well! LOL! So many books and so little time has never rang truer than it has in these last few years! I’m excited to see this book through to its conclusion! Nice review!
