ARC Review: The Other Girl by Erica Spindler

When this book first came on my radar, I admit, I was excited to dive in.  The premise just sounded right up my alley and I couldn’t pick it up fast enough.  And there were some things about this book that I really enjoyed.  But others fell a flat.

Officer Miranda Rader wasn’t always the clean cut, law abiding citizen she is now.  She was a wild teenager from the wrong side of the tracks once, and trouble might’ve been her middle name.  One night, after drinking with and being left stranded on the side of a back road by one of her brother’s friends, Randi hitches a ride with a college guy and another young woman.  That night changes the course of Randi’s life forever after no one believes what she has to say about it.  Now, 14 years later and thinking she had put all that behind her, people start turning up dead and the only link between them is that night.

I thought the story here was really well done.  It was interesting and kept me guessing.  Even though I knew who was responsible, I really didn’t know.  Yeah, that doesn’t make sense, but you’ll see.  But there were also some things about it that kept throwing me out of the flow of the story.

For one, the writing.  I thought this was all a bit too choppy for my liking.  I didn’t think the scenes flowed seamlessly and it was a bit of a jerky ride even when I was interesting in what was happening.

Second, the romance.  I found the romance completely unnecessary and wish there wouldn’t have been any because the characters didn’t make sense together, didn’t connect, and I had a hard time believing there could be anything there.  From feelings to even a physical connection, it just didn’t work for me.  And with it not adding anything extra to the plot, I found it would’ve been better off without it.

Other than that, I continued being interested in the story and I was happy with the resolution in the end.  All a little too convenient and maybe there’s one thing I had a hard time believing when it came to the killer’s identity and Miranda’s memory, but still interesting and satisfying in the end.
