“Comparing it to Ms. Tucker’s TEN TINY BREATHS (which I loved) I think this one lacked some depth…”
~ Under the Covers
I’ve wanted to read this series for a long time and I’m just now getting around to it thanks to adding it to my Roundabout Challenge. BURYING WATER is about a young woman who finds herself with no memory and the victim of rape and assault. This is told in a then and now fashion and the reader knows who the woman is pretty much from the beginning.
I had a lot of ups and downs while reading this book. I liked the characters, then I didn’t and just wanted to roll my eyes and slap them, then I would like them again. One thing was for certain, I was happy that “Water” (the name she goes by now) was able to get a new life away from the mess she got herself in. But other that that, I didn’t really love her character. I felt bad for her and that was the extent of my connection.
Jesse, the hero of the story, is not necessarily the good guy. He was obviously involved in some things he shouldn’t have. But I never got the feel that he was either a “bad boy” or a “good boy”. He’s certainly not the cookie cutter sheriff son, but he tries to do good even when he’s mixed up in bad. I wanted more from his character and I can’t quite put my finger on what that more is.
This is a darker new adult story while I think it still follows a lot of the traditional things from the genre (especially from a few years back). Comparing it to Ms. Tucker’s TEN TINY BREATHS (which I loved) I think this one lacked some depth, but you’ll probably still enjoy it if you liked that one.
The resolution to the “big bad” problem was a little too convenient for my liking. I was expecting it to go in a different direction but all the conflict was really more in the past than in the present. I found it to be anti-climactic. Nevertheless, I may pick up the next book in the series and see how that goes for me but I’m not rushing to pick it up.

I’ve never read K.A. Tucker before, but I have heard good things about her books in general. I have the third book in this series, Chasing River, on my TBR because one of the narrators is Steve West and he is AMAZING! But the premise of this particular book isn’t all that appealing to me. I can understand why you didn’t love this.
I’ve enjoyed her books before. Ten Tiny Breaths, Until It Fades, He Will Be My Ruin. I can recommend those. 🙂 Yeah, this one just wasn’t a total winner for me.
This doesn’t seem like my type of book. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
