Trope: Reverse Harem
A romance book falls into the reverse harem trope when within a relationship there is one woman who has has three of more partners. It’s different to a menage romance for a couple of reasons:
- There’s a singular woman who has multiple male partners. It’s important that it’s a woman at the centre, rather than a man for it to be considered reverse harem. The meaning of the word harem in this context may not be historically accurate. But in common parlance a harem means multiple women being the lovers of one man, reverse harem switches this around.
- There are more than two male partners – for romance books where it’s one woman and two men, we have those categorised as menage romances
