” If you strip away all the action and suspense, all the worldbuilding and secondary characters and you just make it about the romance, it would still be an excellent book because the love between these two men is just so strong. ”

I was a little worried in starting this series simply because I thought it would be a little bit confusing for me. But I found that SMOKE & MIRRORS was actually a very easy read, so easy and engaging that I read it all in a single evening. I can totally see why this series is so popular and well-loved. The characters are simply amazing, but there’s also a great mix of action, romance and humor. I enjoyed the worldbuilding, but it’s actually not as complex as I initially thought it would be so I think if you’re curious about this series, you can still jump in and be fine. There’s also a glossary and a character list in the beginning to kind of help you if you need it. I didn’t use it because, as I said, it turned out to be much more simpler than I was expecting.

This book is all about Dexter and Sloane. The opening scene of this book is a gripping one and if you’re anything like me, it will break your heart into pieces. Thankfully, it doesn’t last long, but it does set the entire book into motion. A lot of what happens occurs off screen and Dexter and Sloane are left in the dark. I will say that there were a couple of times when I thought some of the things that occurred with a bit unbelievable like for example, the presence of the villain in their bedroom watching them sleep, but Dex is so easily able to escape him on his own after torture. So there are some points that gave me a little bit of a pause but all in all, I don’t consider them to be deal breakers.

Of course, the best part of this book is the romance between Dexter and Sloane. If you strip away all the action and suspense, all the worldbuilding and secondary characters and you just make it about the romance, it would still be an excellent book because the love between these two men is just so strong. You can feel it thrumming on the pages of this book and I’m also happy to note that there are some delicious sex scenes in this book as well. So all in all, I think this book has a good balance of everything.
