”ย I found that when I wasnโt listening to the audiobook, I was thinking about what was going to happen and if thatโs not a sign of an engaging read, then I donโt know what is.”
~ Under the Covers
This series has been on my radar for years but I finally got to it and I have to say, I wasnโt expecting to like it as much as I did. While I do still have some issues with her, the story was one that I couldnโt get out of my head. I found that when I wasnโt listening to the audiobook, I was thinking about what was going to happen and if thatโs not a sign of an engaging read, then I donโt know what is.
THE SELECTION is very much like The Bachelor meets The Hunger Games. In a world where there are many long-suffering people, Prince Maxon is looking to find a happily ever after. When they open up a lottery of sorts to all eligible bachelorettes to enter to win the princeโs heart, itโs a opportunity that America Singer cannot let pass. She doesnโt expect to win, but that doesnโt stop her from trying when the former love of her life decides that he no longer wants her anymore.
Surprisingly, thereโs a lot of heartbreak and emotion in this story. Iโm not a huge fan of the world. Itโs too depressing for me and I would never want to live in this world myself, but for the story, it does make for an interesting world to explore.
Out of all the characters in the story America is one of the best. Although she is far from perfect, she is probably the most grounded. Prince Maxon grew on me as the book progressed. I liked that he seemed to want the best for her and didnโt force her to stay like I expected him too. I suspect a romance will bloom beautifully between them.
Thereโs also Aspen who I actually really liked in the beginning. But his actions and decisions later on in the book kind of made me regret that. While I understand where he is coming from, it can come across as melodramatic to some readers. But all in all, THE SELECTION is an engaging read that will have fans begging for more.
If you can listen to the audio version of this book, I would highly recommend it. The narrator does a superb job of bringing these characters to life and I look forward to listening to the second book in the series.

I’ve had my eye on this series because of the covers but haven’t taken the plunge yet but I’ll definitely be looking into getting them soon…thanks Annie!
They are beautiful covers, aren’t they? Love the dresses!
The covers are eye catching…but the depressing world is not for me
Yeah, it’s quite sad the world they live in. But thankfully once the first quarter of this book happens, the rest is set in a more lavish place with the prince ๐
