“I liked this book, but I didn’t fall in love with it like other readers have. ”
~ Under the Covers
People go crazy over this book and this series so I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. Before starting RED QUEEN, I really had no expectations. I got the book, but I didn’t read the blurb and when I read it, it had also been a while since I read other YA so there was nothing I could really compare it to. That being said, I went in not knowing anything about this author apart from the fact that she has some loyal fans.
For me, the RED QUEEN follows a bit of what’s popular amongst YA readers right now. Right away, I saw the similarities to the Red Rising series by Pierce Brown but I would say it has more of a Fantasy influence rather than Sci Fi. There are different castes in this world that separates people just like the Red Rising series does. It even goes by color like Reds, Silvers, etc.
The heroine of the story is Mare and she is a Red. She and her family have it tough. At eighteen, her brothers have been placed in the army and with her birthday approaching, she knows she is next. However something happens that is a nice twist to the story, but you’ll have to read it to find out what it is.
I liked this book, but I didn’t fall in love with it like other readers have. While I liked the world, for me the writing just didn’t stand out to me. It felt very simple and almost too basic even for a YA reader. I have definitely read other books by authors who don’t skimp out on eloquent writing and vocabulary because they writing for younger audiences. I did feel like the writing in this one was a bit “watered down” so to speak, but I will still be continuing on with the series. If you read a lot, I doubt this one will take up much of your time. It’s definitely a quick one.

Why do you think you weren’t into it? I thought it was okay, but maybe for me it was the writing style.
Thanks for the review, I’m not much of a YA reader.
I used to read it a lot a while back but have recently started getting into it again. There are some really amazing ones out there!
