“Maas likes to keep her readers in the dark a lot, which I don’t mind at all, but it is also important for the author to have that level of trust with the reader because once they get burned, it’s very hard to come back from that.”
~ Under the Covers

I know what you’re thinking. I know I said that I wasn’t going to be reading any more Sarah J. Maas after reading her last release from her other series, but I did enjoy this series in the past and since I waited to see what the general reactions were before reading it myself, I thought that since the majority of people enjoyed it that I would try it out myself.

Again, I think this series is very much of much. It follows the same style as the previous books in the series but it also reminds me a little of her other series as well. Maas likes to keep her readers in the dark a lot, which I don’t mind at all, but it is also important for the author to have that level of trust with the reader because once they get burned, it’s very hard to come back from that.

So while I went into this book with an open mind, forgetting all about the other series, I did still notice that the author falls back on her “safety zones”. There’s a lot of back and forth between the characters and in some cases, you’re not really sure what they are going to do. I don’t connect well with the characters in this series as much as her other one and even five books into the series, I still can’t pinpoint why.

The writing is good. It’s stellar, in fact, especially since it’s meant for Young Adult readers. But don’t let that stop you from reading it because it’s written for a younger audience. Maas’s writing is very mature and eloquent and I actually think it’s suitable for all ages.

The main point that I want to get across is that although I did enjoy the book overall, it did take me a long time to finish it. It took me nearly a week, which for me, is equivalent to a year. I can usually finish a book pretty quickly and even with slightly lengthier novels like this one, it usually doesn’t take me very long to finish but for some reason, I found myself reaching for other books in between so I had to make my rating reflect that.

All in all, it’s still a good read. I’m just not sure that I’m one of those readers who goes bananas for Maas anymore.
