“the execution didn’t work for me.”
~ Under the Covers

I’ve wanted to try Leigh Bardugo since forever it seems.  I didn’t jump on the bandwagon early enough and then a lot of the releases where spin-offs or interconnected and I just didn’t have the time or energy to start at the right place.  So when I saw this was coming out, I knew it would be the right place for me to start.

NINTH HOUSE is very slow.  I’ll just put that out there, this is not a fast paced story and by the time I was halfway I felt like a lot of nothing had filled the pages.  We still didn’t really understand things completely.  I can appreciate not having info dump syndrome, but I wish the pacing would’ve been better.  It really diminished my enjoyment of this book.  And it’s an otherwise interesting concept!  Magic involved in secret societies at Ivy League colleges.

There’s many people that loved this story and it may just be a case of “it’s me not you”.  I love mysteries and this one had that in a paranormal setting which should’ve been right up my alley.  But the execution didn’t work for me.  And because of that I really didn’t care much of what happened to our main characters either.

I don’t think I’m invested enough to read the next one but we’ll see what happens when the time comes around.  I may change my mind and give this series a second shot because it does have potential.

  1. I read shadow and bone. I liked it enough to put siege and storm on my tbr but I’m in no rush.

If this is that slow then I’ll pass.

  2. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it Francesca. All the other reviews I’ve seen have been glowing so I appreciate this review even more
