~Shiloh Walker~

Hi Shiloh and welcome back to UTC! I’m so excited about the first book in the SECRETS & SHADOWS series to be out! I am a big fan of the Ash Trilogy and I am looking forward to seeing more of that in this new series.

Thanks for having me back…

Tell us a bit about DEEPER THAN NEED and the Secrets & Shadows series in general. What can readers expect?

A town with lots of secrets. That’s what the Secrets & Shadows series is about…secrets and shadows. The heroes are some seriously damaged people, sometimes damaged by their own making. There are little secrets coming to light all the time. DEEPER THAN NEED is the first book, and Noah was both wonderful and awful to write, because he’s probably one of the most unusual characters I’ve ever written.

Noah is not a conventional hero. He used to be a preacher and an alcoholic. He has a lot of ghosts in his past. He’s overcome most of them now and he’s oh so sexy and tender! What was your inspiration for writing such an unconventional hero?

That’s just who Noah was. He’ll still have the struggle with alcohol–alcoholism is a lifelong thing. He’s on top of it now, but if he ever slips, then he’ll crash. But Noah just came to me the way he was. Most of my characters are like that. I don’t get ‘inspirations’ for them…it’s more like they’ve been waiting in the back of my mind for me to discover them and I just have to get to know them.

Small towns have so many elements that can make them sweet, but you’ve managed to do that while making Madison, Indiana spooky. What has been the appeal of writing these small town stories that are riddled with killers and psychopaths?

It’s not so much the appeal of sticking crazy people in the middle of small towns. I like small towns because I’m familiar with them–a small town can almost take on its own character. But I have that mind that will wonder about the skeletons in the closet or what might have happened in that old run down house that nobody will buy… (no, a house in Madison didn’t inspire this series). They just fit together in my mind.

What’s your favorite thing about writing the stories in Madison, Indiana? And the hardest? (Note: in the books Madison is in Ohio)

I had a legitimate reason to visit the winery there…and call it research. That was fun. The hardest thing? Well, Madison is a real town, and in reality, it’s a great little town…I love going down there for a day to visit the winery and just walk around. So taking this small town and twist it up in a place that’s…not like it really is…was weird.

Have you based any of your stories in real life events?

There are bits and pieces of things I’ve seen or known–like Noah’s alcohol addiction, I’ve had people close to me fight that battle and it’s not an easy one to win. One of the heroines from the novella had ADHD and issues with depression and those are things I have myself so that I can relate, so there are emotions and things I work into the characters that are connected to things I’ve dealt with or others I’ve known have dealt with and sometimes I’ll read about something that will spark an idea but the ideas take on a life of their own.

What is one top tip to keep reader’s on the edge with suspense?

Oh…man. Show them shades of the secrets, bits and pieces, but not the full picture until it’s time to wrap it, I guess.

Which authors have inspired your work?

I’d probably have to pick Nora Roberts as the number one…I don’t know I’d say she so much as inspires my work, but it was her writing that hooked me on romance, so if it wasn’t for her, I don’t know if I would have ever tried to write it myself.

What’s your favorite quote from the DEEPER THAN NEED?

I’ve got a number of them… but here’s one of them.

This went so deep. It was deeper than need, deeper than desire, deeper than anything sheโ€™d ever felt.

What’s next for Shiloh Walker?

I’m wrapping up a couple of things before I get started on my next romantic suspense. I’m hoping to finish up the next book in my urban fantasy series I write under J.C. Daniels and maybe a novella or something for my digital publisher.
