ARC Review: Wicked As You Wish by Rin Chupeco

Chupico wrote a world of fairy tales and folklore mixed into one magical kingdom. In this world, Alice in Wonderland’s Rabbit hole is a time portal, Sleeping Beauty’s spin needle can be used as a weapon, King Arthur’s sword has many names and the Cheshire Cat is the Duke of Wonderland. That’s just to start. Similar to the TV show Once Upon a Time, all the tales were connected one way or the other. If you’re a Disney fan, this will be a treat for you. Chupico also threw in Filipino folk tales along with their general culture and cuisine. These were especially fun for me to read only because I grew up hearing about those crazy tales. It’s about time someone brings them to light.

Unfortunately, there were a few things that did not catch my interest. While the addition of the fairy tales was a fun part of the story, I found it a bit much. There were times, I was immersed with the story and the author threw in unnecessary information. Such as how a certain princess is connected to this character or that. I wish she just stuck with the Filipino folktales and cultures which are unknown to most. There was another part of the story that I thought was unnecessary or unrealistic. There was a scene about Filipino food brought to lunch at school. Now, if you grew up in the US much less in a high school in Arizona and you brought in the kind of foods mentioned, you will pretty much get laughed at. Sounds crazy and mean, but seriously. Plus, “pancit and adobo” for lunch is most likely a no go since they’re not good cold. If you ever watch that stand up comedian, Jokoy, you’ll get what I mean.

With all that said, rating this book was kind of hard because I wanted to like this book so much. Unfortunately, the bad outweighs the good. I’m not sure if I will read the next installment. I might wait for reviews before I decide.
