“I have to give further kudos to Kiersten White for setting this entire series during the Ottoman Empire. What a unique setting!”
~ Under the Covers

It’s been awhile since I read anything by Kiersten White but when I saw this new series I knew I just had to try it. If you’re familiar with Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunters series when I have a feeling that you might like this, especially if you like books like Acheron and Styxx which had a significant part of the book that is written in the past as the characters are growing up. I mention this comparison because the brutality and raw emotion of those scenes in Kenyon’s books remind me a lot of this book. In AND I DARKEN, we have two small children who, at birth, are treated in a disgusting manner by their parents and the people around them. Their father is a scary man and growing up in a world that is filled with war and politics hardens these children.

Lada, our main heroine, is the toughest of the bunch. Even at an early age I would consider her a warrior. She gets made fun of because she is ugly but no one can deny her fiery spirit and skill. Radu is Lada’s younger brother and he is the heart of the group. Lada is always protecting him and when the two of them are betrayed by their father and left to live with their greatest enemies, the two becomes as close as ever. Mahmed is the last piece of their little group. He is the son of the sultan and he’s the spirit that brings this story to life. Together they make a great basis for a series but White throws in some twists that will put them against each other. It’s interesting and once you come to love these characters like I have while reading this book, the twists become gut wrenching.

I have to give further kudos to Kiersten White for setting this entire series during the Ottoman Empire. What a unique setting! It will certainly delight readers and take them on a journey that hasn’t been done before. Also, although this is a Young Adult series, I definitely think that adults could enjoy this series too. There’s plenty of themes that White explores that will appeal to readers of all ages. I can’t wait to see what else White has in store for us!

About Kiersten White

Hi! I'm the New York Times best-selling author of Paranormalcy and Supernaturally. I also give the most awkward hugs in the world. You should probably opt for one of my books over one of my hugs, but then again, maybe you like awkward hugs.

As for me, I like writing flirting scenes, and fighting scenes, and sometimes I write scenes that fall somewhere in between the two, but only if I can't avoid it.

  1. OOh nice! I can’t wait to read this one! I’ve read mixed reviews so far, but it seems like one I might enjoy. The pacing is my only concern, but eventually I will read this one! I loved her first series, Paranormalcy! Great review!
