“There is something so beautiful about this story that transcends the stereotypes of what I want to read about or not. It’s just a beautiful, even if painful at times, and just intense… love story. Full of passion and heartache.” ~Under the Covers
There are certain things that a great book should do. ย It should grab your attention from the very beginning, you should connect with the characters to the point that you feel as if you’re living the story right along with them. ย It should tug at the strings of your heart and just MAKE YOU FEEL. ย And LOVE, IN ENGLISH did all that and more.
This is the story of a 23 year old Canadian girl, a bit of a rebel, full of tattoos and piercings and armed with a free spirit that heads to Spain in search of an adventure. ย She’s going to teach English to Spaniards who need help with their conversational English. ย What she finds is a wonderful group of people that quickly become good friends, and a connection to a man that’s forbidden but undeniable.
Mateo Casalles is the epitome of a refined man, the type that you will be drooling all over for. ย He’s 38, an ex professional soccer player now restaurant owner. ย A business man, who likes to wear suits. ย Smart, charismatic, smitten….and married. ย While he’s at the language camp, he’s left home his beautiful wife and their young daughter.
So let me start off by stating the obvious. ย This book involves cheating. ย You may have noticed before than when this happens I usually hate it and can really ruin my enjoyment of a book. ย But there are those few times where I can overlook it because it’s done so in a way that is such part of the way that book has to be written that it wouldn’t be the same had you taken it out. ย LOVE, IN ENGLISH is an example of that.
Don’t let the preconceived ideas of the fact you may hate the subject matter deter you from reading this book. ย There is something so beautiful about this story that transcends the stereotypes of what I want to read about or not. It’s just a beautiful, even if painful at times, and just intense… love story. Full of passion and heartache.
Karina Halle has a way with words. ย I’ve said that before and I’ll say it again. ย She really manages to paint such a bright, colorful and emotional story with simple words and makes us live in this world along with the characters for as long as it takes us to read her books. ย As usual, LOVE, IN ENGLISH was a fast read for me because once I started it I couldn’t put it down.
I really hope that we will see more contemporary romance from Karina Halle in the future, because truly this woman can just write anything she sets out to. ย And I love every second of it!
Fave quote:
There really are too many to write down here, especially when Mateo was speaking and opening his soul. ย But this one I thought was beautiful.
โLove is like a thief, it robs you of all thought and logic, and all you have left is a heart that you can only pray is strong enough to survive the rest.โ

To a restless dreamer like Vera Miles, it sounded like the experience of a lifetime. Instead of spending her summer interning for her astronomy major, she would fly to Spain where sheโd spend a few weeks teaching conversational English to businessmen and women, all while enjoying free room and board at an isolated resort. But while Vera expected to get a tan, meet new people and stuff herself with wine and paella, she never expected to fall in love.
Mateo Casalles is unlike anyone Vera has ever known, let alone anyone sheโs usually attracted to. While Vera is a pierced and tatted free spirit with a love for music and freedom, Mateo is a successful businessman from Madrid, all sharp suits and cocky Latino charm. Yet, as the weeks go on, the two grow increasingly close and their relationship changes from purely platonic to somethingโฆmore.
Something that makes Vera feel alive for the first time.
Something that can never, ever be.
Or so she thinks.

Claudia shrugged and pulled down at her yellow tee. โNot my problem. Eduardo is nice but Ricardo is really nice.โ
โHow did it happen?โ I asked, kinda wanting the sordid details.
She was coy. โThe way it usually happens.โ
โDid you make the first move?โ
Another shrug. โWhy not?โ
I swear, a shrug and a โwhy not?โ were the Spaniardsโ go-to answer for everything.
โWell, then I guess it seems safeโand a little boring nowโto tell you that I have a crush on someone.โ
Her brows quirked up. โOther than Mateo?โ
โWhat?โ
โYou are sleeping with Mateo, no?โ
โWHAT?!โ
โNo?โ
โNo!โ I exclaimed, appalled. โWhy does everyone keep thinking that?โ
โBecause you are always together,โ she said simply. She took a sip of wine. โThe attraction is very obvious. So, I figured you must be sleeping together.โ
โHeโs married!โ
โYes, but you are not.โ
I shook my head adamantly. โItโs wrong. I donโt want to be the other woman. Iโve seen my dad go for the other woman, and I canโt put Mateoโs daughter through that,โ I said. โOr his wife,โ I quickly added.
โThat doesnโt mean that you canโt have feelings for anyone else.โ
โYes, it does mean that.โ
โMaybe you are meant to be together.โ
โWeโre not! There isnโt even a together. Weโre just friends. I havenโt done anything about it, and so far my feelings are totally one-sided.โ
Claudia got up off the couch and brought a pack of cigarettes out of her front jean pocket. โIf you think it is on the one side, you have not seen the way he looks at you.โ
She walked over to her small patio table and pulled out a chair. I got up and stormed after her, my nerves dancing excitedly.
โWhat do you mean, the way he looks at me?โ I asked, lowering my voice in case there were people around listening. I felt like bouncing off the walls.
She slid the ashtray toward her as I sat down. โYou do not see it. But I do. I think everyone does. He looks at you likeโฆlike youโre his favorite food.โ
โFavorite food?โ
She lit her cigarette. โYes. Youโre like his favorite food in the whole world. He wants to have you, eat you, devour you. He thinks about you all the time, craves you. But he cannot have you for one reason or another. Perhaps you upset his stomach. Maybe he is on a diet, yes? All he wants is a taste, but he cannot even have that. That is how he looks at you.โ
I sat there, stunned, as some of her smoke blew in my face. Thatโs how Mateo looked at me? Like he wanted to eat me? I was pretty sure thatโs how I looked at him. Just last night I was contemplating nibbling on his earlobes.
โAnd yes,โ she said, leaning closer to me, a small smile on her lips, โthat is also how you look at him.โ Great, a mind reader. โBut you are more subtle about it. You try not to let everyone know. But, we know.โ
โThere is nothing to know,โ I reminded her, poking the table with my finger for emphasis. โWe are not sleeping together. He is married. I have a crush. That is it. The end of the story.โ
โA crush?โ she questioned. โVera, I think youโre in love with him.โ
No fucking way. Not love. That did not happen with me, not ever and not now.
โYou canโt fall in love in a week,โ I told her heatedly.
โYou can fall in love in a second,โ she said with a snap of her fingers. โThe heart has no regard for time.โ
With that sobering thought, Claudia told me about her ex-boyfriend and how they fell in love at first sight then took the conversation back to Ricardo and their exploits. I envied her so badly right then and there. She could fawn over Ricardo, kiss him, fuck him, and no one would ever bat an eye. It was okay for them to be together. It wasnโt forbidden.
I gulped the rest of the wine and left her apartment, heading back to reception to meet Cristina for my next one-on-one, my mind and heart and hormones all over the place. Lo and behold, Mateo was walking up the path toward me.
He was on the phone, smiling.
His shirt was off and slung over his shoulder, exposing his bare chest, abs, and arms.
Holy fuck.
For a moment, I was sure that time had stopped. Or maybe ever single nerve, cell, vein, bone, muscle in my body just slowed as I took him all in.
From his thick-veined forearms to his sculpted shoulders and broad chest peppered with neatly-trimmed chest hair, to his six-pack abs, he had, by far, the best body Iโd ever seen on a man. He kept himself in fine-ass shape, looking more like a young athlete than anything else. He and David Beckham had more in common than I thought, although Davidโs skin tone wasnโt as mesmerizing. Mateoโs color was amazing, just beautiful, this dark, golden bronze that covered him everywhere. I wanted so badly to just touch him, to lick the sheen of sweat off his skin. I bet he tasted like victory.
And to think this was the man that Claudia said wanted to taste me.
I really, really wanted to believe her.
Meanwhile, I was just standing there like I was melting into a puddle of myself. I clamped my mouth shut as he walked past and I heard him say into the phone, โNo, mi tesorito, it was easy, I didnโt injure myself.โ He was beaming, talking about the game, to his wife. To his tesorito. And he called their relationship complicated? This was complicated.
He winked at me in acknowledgement, his smile becoming broader. I tried to smile back but it wouldnโt come. I just stared at him, feeling stupid, foolish, and strangely rejected. In a perfect world I may have been his favorite food, but it still wasnโt what he got served every day. I turned around and walked down the hill, my heart feeling like a pincushion.
โVera!โ I heard him call out from behind. I stopped and nervously glanced over my shoulder. He was holding the phoneโs receiver to his chest, grinning at me. โI need to ask you your question.โ
โWhat?โ I asked, hoping it was quick.
โWho is your favorite Spaniard here?โ
Seriously?
And yet I couldnโt lie to him.
โYou,โ I said, more to myself than to him. Then I turned around and walked away as quickly as I could.

Glad you loved it like I did!
Thanks Francesca I think I might check this one out.
Cheating is one of #1 dislikes but I understand the point you made in your review that depending on the way something is written there can be exceptions.
See, now I’m really curious about this book because you know cheating is one of my hard limits. It’s always a challenge when an author tries to justify it for me, especially in a contemp setting.
