ARC Review: With Every Breath by Lia Riley

I have read Lia Riley in the past and I found the stories in those books a bit too immature for my taste.  But since that’s probably a genre thing more so than author, I decided to pick this book up because I thought the setting and the premise sounded really interesting.

I found a few things.  I enjoyed this book a lot more than I did the previous work I read by her.  I usually dislike, and I mean DISLIKE, insta love and this book was portrayed as that.  However, the way it’s developed was a bit more gradual going from insta-lust to yeah quickly insta-love.  But it didn’t bother me.  Shocking!  These are all good points.

But on the not so good part, the things I was expecting to see in this story which originally attracted me to the subject (like actually Patagonia and having the setting be more active in the story) were missing.  I feel as if this story could’ve been set in just about any other mountain somewhere as there is very little attention given to that and to me it was a missed opportunity to add another layer to the story.

Our main characters Auden, the heroine, is a journalist working for a an outdoor lifestyle and sports magazine.  She was recently hired and she has no life experiences in the great outdoors to wow her bosses with.  So she makes up this trip to the Patagonia in order to write a great story that will give her the push she needs in her new job.  With zero experience, she stumbles into one of the best in the sport, Rhys, who is also a man with a dark past as it’s believed that he cut his brother’s cord during a climb and left him for dead.  He would be her perfect story!

As much as their story was entertaining, I can’t say there’s something about either of the characters that stands out too much.  It was a fun read, but also quite angsty.  And for all the leading up to the end, the quick resolution was a bit anti-climatic for me.

I hope if this develops in a series, that we get to explore more of the locations where our characters find themselves.
