Lately, I’ve been all about the small town paranormal romances. There’s something so endearing about this subgenre of PNR that just draws me in. And witchy stories make the perfect supernatural to feature in these.
In WITCH, PLEASE we first have a very different Ann Aguirre than I’ve read before. Although I’m not an excerpt on her backlist. So that may be a change of pace for you if you’re a longtime fan. This is a story about a family of witches and full of expectations in their community. Our heroine, Danica, has an affinity for electronics and technology. Her and her cousin run a repair shop in town. She’s grown up seeing the effects her mother’s marriage to a human had on her mom’s powers and acceptance in the community. And even though she has a failed relationship under her belt, she doesn’t want to disappoint her grandmother and not marry a witch of good pedigree. Titus walks into her shop one day needing to fix the broken oven at his bakery and all those plans and ideas quickly come crashing down.
This was definitely a cute story and I think the overall plot has a lot of potential. But at the same time it left me feeling a bit underwhelmed. Between the slower pacing and the main characters that didn’t always feel like they were actually spending time getting to know each other, I was left feeling there was something missing in this one. I liked the heroine (and side characters) probably more than the hero. Titus was just ehhh for me. And I really wanted to like him! He definitely felt extremely creepy and clingy at times and I get there’s a supposed reason for that but I still didn’t always like it. I also found that his virginity and the fact that he’s bisexual were not addressed as much as I would’ve liked in the story. I was certainly surprised when the main characters had sex for the first time and there was no clear conversation before, during, after about any of that.
When it came to the actual relationships in this book, romantic or other, they didn’t come across as deep for me. Maybe that was by design, this is a more light hearted book in many ways. But at times it did go into some more serious subjects and again I don’t think they were handled with much depth.
Lastly, I would say there’s a lot of parallels in this witchy world to real racism. I can’t say I felt it was addressed well. And the way part of that is handled towards the end of the story as it involves the HEA just doesn’t sit well with me.
All that but still I found this to be a sweet book. There were fun moments with the family, I loved the support system that the heroine and even the hero have. Family is a central part of this story and of both MCs and that is always heartwarming and makes for a perfect summer read. So if you’re looking for a cute paranormal to read while enjoying those last few rays of sunshine this Summer, maybe give this one a try.

Although I love the title, and like Ann ‘s books, I’m not a fan of “virgin” stories, on the whole
Thanks for the review
Bummer that it was just so-so, but I love the small town paranormal tie-in, too, so maybe.
Thanks for your review.
I read this book thinking it would be as good as Ex Hex, but sadly I was sorely mistaken
: / Yeah, the attempted parallels between racism and non-magic people were very weird…
