ARC Review: Winter Oranges by Marie Sexton

I’d consider myself a pretty big Marie Sexton fan. I’ve read her books for years but this is the first book of hers that seemed to completely depart from her other books. The only way I can describe this book is that it has some magical realism to it. If you’re familiar with Lisa Kleypas’ Friday Harbor series this book follows along the same lines where magic occurs in an otherwise Contemporary setting. The magic is unexplained so you really need to go into this book knowing that. Otherwise you’ll probably be like me, wondering what the hell is going on. I should’ve read the blurb before starting it. I think that would’ve helped a lot.

After the initial shock wore off, I found that it was easy to enjoy Jason and Ben together. Jason is a B-list actor who is taking some time off to gather himself after a few bad runs. He buys an old house, which is inhabited by a ghost from the 1840s. Ben is actually a ghost inside a snow globe and Jason becomes the first person to see and hear him after many years. Jason and only hear Ben when the music box is playing but other than that, he can see him just fine. Their romance happens pretty quickly as they go about doing some mundane things. However, it’s all a little bit surreal since to outsiders, Jason is basically just talking to himself.

While I was reading this, several questions popped into my mind. A lot of them I can’t repeat here but of course, I was curious about how Jason and Ben would be together physically since Ben is a ghost. The answer turned out not to be quite complicated but again, you really need to disregard any logical explanations for anything that happens in this book. As I said earlier, the magic and how Ben happened to get inside the globe isn’t really addressed. Nor is how Jason is able to go inside the globe to be with Jason. So if you can turn a blind eye to all the major plot holes in the story, the romance is quite sweet.

I read this entire book in one sitting. WINTER ORANGES pulled several emotions from me, but in the end, it turned out to be quite the unique read. Well done to Sexton for stepping out of her comfort zone to deliver her readers something different.
