“If you want something that will keep you on the edge of your seat and keep you guessing until the end, then you need to give this series a try.”
~ Under the Covers
With a town like Rockton, trouble is inevitable. The towns residents are all there to escape either because they are the victim of a crime, or they’re the criminal. So, when a man claiming to be a U.S. Marshall finds Rockton and says he’s looking for a dangerous fugitive…it’s possible. But Casey and Sheriff Dalton don’t quite believe him, his presence raises more questions than answers. Then he is murdered before identifying who he is looking for. With a town full of secrets and hidden pasts, finding suspects is easy. But, they need to figure out who would go as far as murder to keep their secrets buried.
If you are after a series full of intrigue, danger and atmosphere then you don’t need to look any further than the Rockton series by Kelley Armstrong. Set in a purposefully isolated location where man is only just holding off the wild and populated by characters with murky pasts, each book gives you an atmospheric tale where nothing is quite what it appears. Add in a romance between Casey our detective and Sheriff Dalton, a man born and raised in the town then this makes it one of my favourite series.
Like the other books in this series you can expect an intriguing mystery, where you can never quite land on who you think may be responsible. There are too many possibilities. And, as the relationships between characters continue to develop and grow in complexity it just makes it harder to guess. I confess, Armstrong kept me going right until the moment of reveal with this book.
But, as much as I loved the case this book focuses on, what had me glued to the page was the ongoing story of the conflict between those that live in the town and the Council, the people who finance and run the town. More is revealed in this book and I can’t wait to see where Armstrong goes with this. Another aspect of this book that I enjoyed was the exploration of Casey’s relationship with her sister April, who makes an appearance in this book. Although we know a lot of Casey’s past and what has brought her to Rockton, it was interesting seeing certain events in Casey’s life as seen through the eyes of her sister. It gave a whole new perspective, not just to the reader, but to Casey as well.
Another great book in this series, it’s a fantastic thriller with a dash or romance. If you want something that will keep you on the edge of your seat and keep you guessing until the end, then you need to give this series a try.
