“What started out as a light hearted read ended up just annoying me at best.”
~ Under the Covers

I’ve seen a lot of buzz around for this author and when I saw this MC book was coming out I had to jump on it right away.  What started out as a light hearted read ended up just annoying me at best.

First of all, having a story told from a POV of a heroine you just can’t cope with is not necessarily a good thing.  And I could not like Aubrey for the life of me.  Mostly I just wanted to smother her with a pillow.  She suffers a bit too much of that poor little rich girl who is trying to figure out life now without daddy’s help syndrome.  She was immature a lot of the time and after I started trying to like her, by the end I just didn’t care about her one way or the other.  She ruined the story for me.

Of course when you get a heroine that is this annoying to me there are …..not just one, not just two, but three men vying for her affection. *cue eye roll*  Here’s a fun tidbit, I would’ve much rather have read the original story about Aubrey’s grandmother’s affair that is hinted at then Aubrey’s.  The only redeeming quality of this particular book was the hero.  Zion is that elusive good bad guy, and I really liked him.  I just didn’t buy the insta love and the readiness to make life altering decisions for Aubrey when she did nothing but act like a brat.

As for the story, I personally don’t like the “light” MC setting in any book.  That is just not real to me.  I feel as if this book sugar coated that a bit too much and when things came to a head and decisions had to be made, there were no real repercussions and ramifications for those decisions.  Also, not real.  Too many things tied with bows and perfect coincidences in the end for my taste.  That’s not what I look for in an MC romance.

That being said, I did enjoy the side characters that I’m hoping will be book two, Dash and Ellen.  I think I will consider checking that out because they seemed to have better heads on their shoulders than our heroine here did and maybe I could enjoy the author’s story in that case.  We will see.
