” I found myself falling in love with him in The Thief.
~ Under the Covers

Was anyone else approaching the release of The Thief with trepidation? I know I was. After the car crash that was The Chosen, the previous book in the series, I was a little scared about where Ward was going to take us. However, I have been a super fan of the Black Dagger Brotherhood for 10 years, I wasn’t going to give it up without a fight especially after adoring her recent novella Dearest Ivie. So, although I approached it like you would a lion on safari, with great caution, I couldn’t resist its allure.

The Thief is Assail and Sola’s book and much like every other romance in the series their tale has been woven through several of the previous instalments in the series, with this book being the culmination of that story. Will they come together or won’t they? I admit I have never been that excited about Assail, unlike other characters he has never intrigued me, but I found myself falling in love with him in The Thief. Maybe it was seeing him so vulnerable that did it, but I adored the Sola and Assail story line. Although it didn’t quite pack the emotional punch of other love stories that Ward has written, it was surprisingly sweet for two such hardened characters.

However, I don’t think I am alone in saying that the reason I was both scared and desperate to get my hands on this book was to see what would happen next between V and Jane after the events in The Chosen. First of all, I’ve never been a huge fan of V, even at the beginning unlike the other original Brothers, he never clicked with me. So, having a third book where he was the central character was exasperating. I have no sympathy for V, over the last two books it has just shown why I don’t like him; he’s selfish and so up his own arse that he can’t see straight. I don’t wont to give spoilers so I am being deliberately vague when I say I think Ward may have realised that she had pushed her fans too far with V’s antics as she pulls him back pretty quickly. So, although at the end of the book I no longer wanted to beat the shit out of V, I also found that I am still completely indifferent to him.

Now, lets talk about other interesting characters that pop up in this book and have made me desperate to see what will happen next! Jo Early, the woman who has no idea she’s a half breed vampire and about to go through the transition, I can’t wait to see where Ward take us with her. The twins cousins of Assail Ehric and Evale, although they are virtually silent I couldn’t help but fall in love with them in this book. Now, the big one…Murhder. FINALLY. He makes an appearance and I really hope he features heavily in the next book.

In general I really liked this book, Assail and Sola give us a good injection of romance and I went into this book incensed with V but Ward managed to calm me down by the end.  However, what really got me stuck to the book and guaranteed that I will be reading the next is the intriguing storylines that appear to be coming up next. Between Murhder being back on the scene, Jo transitioning and Throe up to no good with his deadly shadows there will exciting times ahead in Caldwell.

  1. OMG I can’t wait to see what Ward does with V. I was so pissed at him after The Chosen. I’m wanting to know more about his antics than the main couple. I do want to see Assail happy though, which is weird considering he’s not a saint. He just really interests me. I definitely need to start this ASAP!

  5. In the end I felt Assail and Sola fell flat for me. Perhaps it’s because Assail is still in that recovery stage. I did like Sola’s strength and stubbornness over all. I’m hopeful we will see more of them. I’m in love with the twins, Ehric and Evale. I hope good things are in store for them.
In full disclosure Vishous has always had my heart. It started in the beginning with his smartass attitude, that “take me or leave me” bravado. It sucked me down the rabbit hole. Having V and Jane as a major part of this book made my fan girl alter ego squeal!!! I don’t want to give any spoilers but I’m happy V is recognizing his inner “I do love my mommy “. I’m also going to have to find me some pink flannel pony pants. Just sayin’. I’m excited about Jo Early being a half breed. Who will help her through the transition…what a question there!!! Murhder-thank you Jesus!!! Finally, we may be getting more time with his crazy self…
I’m more in love with the BDB than when I started this reading adventure what 12-13 years ago. They are still fresh, timeless stories that are constantly evolving.
