Review: The Smallest Part by Amy Harmon

I’m a fan of Ms. Harmon’s writing so when I heard she had a new book coming out, I knew I wanted to read it.  I didn’t even need to know what the book was about.  So I went into this book without knowing much, I barely glanced at the blurb.  It was clear to see, however, where this story was going to from the very first chapter.

THE SMALLEST PART is a book about the journey, not the twists of the story.  You don’t have to read this for the shock value of the unexpected.  In fact, everything that happens in this book is quite simple and fated in a way.  Maybe there was no other resolution.  And the journey doesn’t always have to give you the choices you want the characters to make.  I always enjoy taking that journey with Ms. Harmon’s stories because I get so caught up in them.  In the characters, in their choices, their mistakes and their successes.  But for some reason I was a little less involved in this one.  Or maybe on a rollercoaster ride when at times I was really into it and then that excitement would fizzle out.

There are a few things however that I took away from this.  First is that I think Ms. Harmon does a great job at tackling deep issues in a way that makes them feel real.  Real emotions, real consequences, real life.  She dealt with issues such a suicide and depression, insecurities and body image in a way that felt natural and made you understand where the characters where at.  What glasses they were seeing things through.  And I really appreciate the way she does that.  I love how this author explores human nature.  And yes, that’s a thing for me.  Friendship, love, devotion, belief.  Her characters are always deep and layered and can even show us something about ourselves in them.

One other tidbit that I found was a surprise was the small tie in this book has to previous standalones of hers.  Moses from THE LAW OF MOSES and Tag from THE SONG OF DAVID make cameo appearances in this book.  If you’ve read these books (I’ve only read Moses) then you’ll get an extra bit of excitement at seeing them be part of this story.  But you certainly don’t need to read those to enjoy this book, it stands alone completely.
