THE RED is Tiffany Reisz’s first return to Erotic BDSM Romance since finishing The Original Sinners series. I have read her other books since then but haven’t been too impressed with them so I was very excited to see that she was returning to what made her gain more attention in the first place. I truly believe that this is what Reisz is good at and I hope she continues to write more in this genre.
That being said, I did have some high expectations with this book. THE RED has a very interesting premise. Our heroine, Mona, is in debt and her family-owned art gallery will soon have to close because she can’t afford to keep it open. Just when she is about to lose hope, a man appears offering her a deal that she can’t turn down.
Malcolm is a very peculiar man. He gives Mona a chance to save her gallery if she agrees to sleep with him. But that’s not all, he wishes to essentially make her his whore. The things they do together will undoubtedly push some people’s boundaries. But as a reader of Reisz’s books already, the acts in this book didn’t make me uncomfortable. The sex is creative and unique but my main complaint is that it is cold. While the acts may be dirty as hell, there is no emotion at all shared between the characters. I found Malcolm intriguing only through his interactions with Mona, but he really is a hero that required more depth beyond that. There is no romance at all, and the third character that is introduced occurred too late, which made the ending feel very rushed. If you’re looking for something dirty then you’ll probably like this book. But in terms of actual romance, there is none and that was a big disappointment to me.

I was a little disappointed-her characterization was so strong in her others series & it is blah here! Love or hate her characters (depending on where you are in the series) they were almost 3 dimensional. The premise was interesting but it goes no where if you don’t like the characters.
Oh no! There needs to be emotion between the characters, otherwise how can it be an erotic romance? :-/

It’s not supposed to be a romance. It’s straight-up erotica. The book is promoted as porn, no more. So the constraints of the romance genre don’t apply to erotica/porn I don’t think. I haven’t read it yet but have read alot about The Red from several sources so I’m just sayin’. I have issues with genre classification in general and their inherent expectations.
