“I really disliked the heroine. I usually find that all of Reisz’s heroines enjoyable because they’re usually really smart and interesting. However the heroine in this one is just so dull and unrelatable that I really struggled to connect with her.”
~ Under the Covers
I’ve read all of the books that Tiffany Reisz has written to date and for the most part, I’ve enjoyed them. THE NIGHT MARK is the second book that Reisz has written that is a bit of a departure from what we usually see from her.
This book is a romance but it’s different because it’s a time travel one. Now I wasn’t fully head over heels in the love with Reisz’s last book, THE BOURBON KINGS, as it kind of had a Historical feel to it. Now this book definitely has a Historical vibe to it because the heroine is swept away and later discovers that she is in the year 1921 with her husband.
This book is aimed for fans of Diana Gabaldon and while I am a huge Outlander fan, I just don’t think this book is up to par. First off, I really disliked the heroine. I usually find that all of Reisz’s heroines enjoyable because they’re usually really smart and interesting. However the heroine in this one is just so dull and unrelatable that I really struggled to connect with her.
My other issue also lie in the fact that I didn’t really care for the time and setting in which this story takes place. The lighthouse is supposed to be a magical thing in the book and there was a lot of emphasis on it. However, I just didn’t feel its magic.
For these reasons, I didn’t enjoy this book and it took me a very long time to finish it. The writing doesn’t even feel like Reisz’s usual style as its very choppy. Likewise, the pacing seems a bit off too. I’m not sure if it was because the author was trying a new style, but it just didn’t work for me. Sadly, I think I’ll be sticking towards this author’s more lighter and perhaps, more erotic, works in the future.

Great review, Annie. I haven’t read this one, but I really haven’t loved anything she’s written (aside from The Headmaster,) like I did her Original Sinners series.
Sorry this one was a miss for you.
I love this author’s other work so I guess perhaps I have some high expectations.
Sorry this didn’t work for you, Annie. This is another author in my TBR pile that I have yet to try but I’m excited to read several of her books. I’ll put this one on the back burner for now tho. Thanks for the review.
I would definitely recommend her the Original Sinners series.
Bummer, I hate when I don’t connect to the characters.
Yes, it’s a bit of a bummer.
This isn’t a time I’m fond of reading about either.
I usually like Historical Romance but I do prefer some time periods more than others.
I’m not into time travel romance that much, thanks for the review!! ,shared on all my socials!
Thank you for sharing, Kathy! I really appreciate it!
I enjoyed The Bourbon Thief but haven’t read this one sorry this one didn’t work for you Annie
I was a little wishy washy on that one actually. I prefer when she just does Romance.
