ARC Review + Tour: The Mother Road by Meghan Quinn

I was looking for funny and funny I got! As with other books I’ve read by author Meghan Quinn, THE MOTHER ROAD features young characters with a fun set of supporting characters and a story that’s fit to be a sitcom. The scenarios they face are crazy in the way that “that didn’t just happen!!!” but there’s also a nice emotional side to the story in the end.

Nevertheless, there are things about this book that I liked and things that fell a bit flat. The first 30-40% of the book the jokes were still fresh and the situations embarrassingly funny. I found myself bursting out laughing at odd moments because you can’t help it! Our hero and heroine are also still early on in the stage of tiptoeing around each other and they were extremely cute. But once I hit that mark, the jokes were getting a bit too much. Especially the bathroom related incidents. There’s only so much shitting and farting jokes I can handle in a certain amount of pages until it looses the fun for me. There is one particular bootie related incident towards the end at the wedding of the heroine’s brother that I just didn’t care for. So that being said, the fun was there but wasn’t the same.

Then we move on to the hero and heroine. Marley has had a crush on her brothers best friend since he moved in the neighborhood. Four years ago on senior year he broke her heart. They haven’t talked to each other since until now they are thrown together for this road trip the McMann family decides to do in honor of their dead mother. She had this all planned out before she died and her kids and husband now want to actually do it as a last hurrah before Paul (the brother) gets married. Just the four of them, one RV, and lots of hot dogs on the open road.

I liked Marley and Porter together now, they were really cute in a way that I have found before with Ms. Quinn’s couples. They fit well together, they share the same devious mind, they are both pranksters. It was a lot of fun to read about them as they get back into the comfort of their old relationship, while discovering the new places they can go together. I just didn’t like Porter’s reasoning. He’s not the most confident man out there and all that self doubt and lack of self-worth was a bit of a turn off for me.

All that being said, I enjoyed my time reading THE MOTHER ROAD, it definitely gave me more than one chuckle and it was a sweet read in the end.
