ARC Review: The Hero by Donna Grant

When I heard that Donna Grant was going to be writing Contemporary Romance, I grew excited. This series has a big emphasis on action and suspense so I can hardly say no to an alpha hero. However, in reading three chapters of the book, I knew something was going wrong when I kept scratching my head in confusion. I persisted though because I’ve read every single one of Donna Grant’s books for years and I wanted to like this one too. But the problem was…I just couldn’t.

First off, there’s quite of a lot of glaring mistakes in the book. As I read, I kept wondering if the editor or author actually believed that any of this was possible because in the real world, where this book is supposed to be set, none of this stuff feels like it would actually happen. Also, I found it odd that the brothers hardly have contact with one another but seem okay with working together on a job immediately. Plus, when the heroine shows up, no one seems to be surprised. There are a lot of leaps of faith in this book and although I can typically get on board with Grant’s stuff, I just couldn’t with this one. The initial set up of the book is just all over the place. Some scenes are short to create intrigue but they come across as confusing and irrelevant instead.

All this stuff might work in a Paranormal Romance because you can make stuff up and it’ll still be okay. But not in Contemporary Romance. Even though it’s fiction, there are still rules you need to follow. I was really disappointed in this.

If you can overlook the obvious errors in this book then maybe you’ll enjoy it, but I couldn’t get on board with it, which is a shame because I usually love all of Grant’s books. I won’t be reading the next book in the series.
