I picked up THE DIABOLIC because of all the hype surrounding it. It’s described as Star Wars meets The Hunger Games so that had me going HELL YEAH! Unfortunately, the book didn’t live up to its expectations and I think this mainly occurred because of its characterization. Whether it was the writing style or the setting, I just couldn’t find myself falling in love with these characters. I’ve never read anything by S.J. Kincaid so I really had no idea what to expect. The author does employ your typical dramatic voice, which I think works well for the YA genre, but I didn’t really feel the highs and lows like I think they were intended to be.
The parts that I think that were supposed to make me gasp and take a step back didn’t get that reaction from me and I also didn’t feel entirely connected to the world or characters. A lot of it felt really cold and emotionless. While I do think the worldbuilding is interesting, it just didn’t make me go WOW. I’m so glad this is a standalone because I’m not sure that I would’ve continued if it were a trilogy or a series.
I would kind of compare this to Game of Thrones. There’s lot of twists and turns, betrayal, passion and all that good stuff but again it lacks the emotion to pull it off. I think if you’re a fan of Sci Fi, then you’ll probably enjoy this one. But for me, this is one of those sad instances where good hype failed me.

Interesting cover…thanks for the review
Oh bummer. I’ve been hearing good things about this one but I couldn’t help but have some initial hesitation. Mostly with it being sci-fi and all space like. Sad to hear it missed the mark with you, but glad you still liked it enough to give it 3 stars! I guess I might just keep it on my back burner! Nice review!
Thanks for the review.
That’s unfortunate. Thanks Annie for the review
