ARC Review: The Bride Behind the Curtain by Darcie Wilde

I don’t know where to start this review, because I can definitely say that I liked this book, it was a quick yet enjoyable read. It contained a few key ingredients that always pulls me towards a book; the first one being a heroine that is marginalized in some way aka a wallflower, in Adele’s case it was because she was plump. It also had the rake (with a heart of gold of course) falling for our overlooked heroine. I love this dynamic of the plain/plump/bluestocking (delete as applicable!) heroine managing to snatch the attention and devotion of the prettiest guy in the room.

I bet you guys can see the “but” coming…and here it is…but, this book is uncannily similar to the Wallflower series by Lisa Kleypas, and I can perfectly understand Wilde’s inspiration, I love that series by Kleypas. However, it does mean that it lends itself to an almost direct comparison, and in that regard this book will always come up short. Wallflowers is a fantastic series that explores friendship as well as romantic love and does it with humour, grace and a dash of heat. The Bride Behind the Curtain doesn’t have the same depth of feeling or character as the aforementioned series and so it felt a little lacking.

That doesn’t mean to say I didn’t enjoy it, because I did and I am definitely going to continue with this series. However, I wasn’t so much left with the urge to read the next book in the series, as I was looking to have a reread of Secrets of a Summer Night the first in the Wallflowers series.
