“…just so entertaining to read.”
~ Under the Covers

There are books sometimes that it’s just so entertaining to read. THE BOYFRIEND PROJECT was one of those books.  Starting off with a bang when our heroine discovers via a live tweet of a bad date that she’s been catfished by her boyfriend.  Not only her, but also 2 other women.  Their reaction to this goes viral and the bond that is formed between them spurs them into committing to the boyfriend project. Six months focusing only on themselves, no men, no dating. But that is quickly put to the test when Samiah has a sexy new co-worker at the tech company she works at. And he’s just hard to resist.

First of all, there are some things about this book that are not as common in romance books but done really well in this book.  One of those is strong and successful female characters.  Samiah, as well as her 2 friends Taylor and London, are smart and talented, with leading roles in their businesses. I love seeing that representation without making them bitchy. Seeing Samiah work through her dream of writing a new app was fun as well.  And the other thing is female friendship bonds.  These 3 women felt like REAL friends, you could take any real life experience between you an your friends and in some way get that feeling from their interactions. I really loved how the author was able to do that.  Another thing I enjoyed was the tiny intrigue aspect of this story. Daniel, our hero, has ulterior motives and I was intrigued to see what he would uncover.

That being said, I think what this book could’ve done a little better was the romantic connection.  While I liked Daniel and Samiah together, they don’t stand out so much to me as the perfect couple. I think in part that is because their connection felt a bit superficial. There’s more page time devoted to everything I mentioned previously and a little less on them getting to really connect.  Now, that doesn’t mean they didn’t have some chemistry, or I didn’t like them together. But it could’ve been a stronger romance.

As I said before, I really liked the friends and I can’t wait for them to get their own books in the future. I’ll certainly be on the lookout for them and expecting them to also be a fun ride.
