ARC Review: Taming Him by Kennedy Fox

I’m always on the look-out for new cowboy romances and I was very excited when I saw this series pop up on my radar. TAMING HIM is the first book about the Bishop brothers and yes, they work on a ranch that is owned by the family. All things considered, this had all the makings for a series I would be all over. But I think in the end this fell just a little short of my expectations. That doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it, necessarily.

First off, the characters. Alex is the youngest and probably the one Bishop brother I was the least interested in. He’s young, a bit immature whether it be about women, relationships or his dedication to work. I’m used to cowboy books where the sense of responsibility for working the ranch feel very real and palpable and in this case, especially with Alex, it didn’t come across. I think age was a factor in that, but also the rest of the family keeping him accountable.

The romance was cute because it was fun. It was meant to be just a vacation fling that turned into more and I can always get behind that. But I also didn’t find a lot of angst or tension keeping them apart. The few issues that come up are dealt with surprisingly easy. That’s actually one of my main issues with this story. It felt too low key and easy. I wanted a bit more struggle. When it comes to angst, this book opens up with a very emotional scene. This set me up to expect a deep and emotional book, and I think I always had that in the back of my mind. But we never got to that.

And then there’s the cowboy element. I thought this didn’t give me enough of it. I’m not sure if it’s because part of this book takes place on vacation, but I was missing the real life of a cowboy stuff. I felt like apart from a few scenes where Alex was working, or a mention of him wearing his work clothes it didn’t have the feel I’ve come to expect when reading about a family that works on a ranch. Maybe Lorelei James has me spoiled. I felt like this was just glossed over and if we replaced his occupation with something else and changed a few key scenes it could’ve been any other type of book.

If you are looking for a fun, sweet, uncomplicated and sexy read then you may want to check this out. I’m left curious enough about some of the other brothers that I may just have to at least try one more story in this series out.
