The Maiden Lane series by Elizabeth Hoyt continues to be one of my favorite Historical Romances out there. I think Hoyt is readily able to give readers unique stories that both capture the reader’s attention and also offer something different to what’s already out there at the moment.

In SWEETEST SCOUNDREL, we are introduced to Eve Dinwoody who has come to Harte’s Folly to investigate her brother’s latest investment. The man in charge, Asa Makepeace aka Harte, assures her that everything is going according to plan and that all his hard work will pay off once Harte’s Folly opens up to the public again. But he does not know that Eve isn’t just there to check on him, she’s there to shut him down.

Alarmed, Asa tries to convince Eve that his work is good and that her brother will profit once he manages to complete everything. However, when there seems to be a series of unfortunate events occurring, it seems that Eve isn’t the only one who wants to stop Harte’s Folly from reopening.

During this time, Hoyt explores their feiry romance in a believable way. I loved the slow burn that this story has and in addition to that, Hoyt also draws deeper into her characters, giving them fears and backstories that add depth to an already well-written story. I was impressed by Eve’s characterization because in the beginning, I perceived her to be strong and independent but as the story goes on and her fears are manifested, it made me enjoy her character even more as we saw some vulnerabilities.

The same goes with Asa. He’s portrayed as quite flippant and determined, but as we learn more about him, we see that he isn’t just passionate about his work. He’s a man with many layers and I enjoyed exploring that in this book. The SWEETEST SCOUNDREL was everything I wanted and more! Elizabeth Hoyt once again gifts readers with a compelling, passionate read!

  1. Thanks for the review! Do you think I could pick this one up without having read the others in the series?

  2. Great review. I have read the whole series so far and love it (and historicals are not my usual cup of tea). I can’t wait to start this one.

I think you could read any of the books without reading the previous in the series. There maybe be some references to previous characters but Elizabeth Hoyt does a great job of letting new readers know who they are.
