Review: Sweet Tea and Sympathy by Molly Harper

I have a confession to make.  I picked up this book purely because of the cover and the title.  I have had bad experiences in the past reading Molly Harper, as in her humor doesn’t really work for me with the paranormal romances I’ve read.  But I figured this was contemporary and it seemed like it would be a cute read so why not?

I’m glad to say that this was a much better experience than those books by miles.  While I can’t say this was a perfect read or that it had me glued to the pages, it was enjoyable and I do want to continue reading the series.

One thing remains, though.  I think Ms. Harper’s heroines are never going to be my favorites.  There’s just something about them that even while I like them (like in this case) I don’t fully connect with.  But keep in mind we’ve gotten pretty far from my heavy dislike of Jane Jameson.

Back to this book.  SWEET TEA AND SYMPATHY is the perfect type of summer read in my opinion.  Our heroine finds herself in a bad position with her career and failing at life in her city until she gets a call from her long lost family (her father’s family) and they’ve offered her a lifeline to come work at the family business in Georgia.  Moving to a different state that is the complete opposite to the pace of life she’s accustomed to and having to reconnect with her father were not high on Margot’s to do list, but they’re her only choice.

I liked that this wasn’t so heavily focused on the romance and maybe even felt more like a story about Margot’s self discovery than purely romance.  I won’t go as far as saying this felt like a women’s fiction novel but it certainly crosses over genres a bit and that worked for me in this case.  It gave enough importance to the situation our heroine finds herself in, her feelings about her father and a family she doesn’t really know.  It gave her the space to come to terms with a different life she never knew she could have.  And yes, there’s the sexy romance with a single father of two and principal of the town’s school.

Overall, SWEET TEA AND SYMPATHY was a nice and refreshing surprise.  If you like small town romances that are packed full of family fun and southern charm you won’t want to miss this series.  I, for one, plan to pick up the next one soon.
