“…that probably describes my feelings in general towards Styx: it was nice, but nothing that stands out.”
~ Under the Covers
Haden “Denny” Underwood has inherited her grandmother’s house. The house and the lady herself are her only happy memories of her childhood, which she spent living with her domineering and abusive father. But, when she moves in, the last thing she expected to inherit was a ghost. At first she thinks she must be going insane…she is hearing a voice in her head after all! But as she listens and even befriends him, she realises he’s just as much a person as she is. Only he’s trapped in the house, cursed to remain there unless Denny can find a way to get him free.
All the blurbs for this book are so misleading. The official one… the one I wrote above… they give the impression that this is going to be a broody, maybe even a slightly dark read. That’s completely untrue. Instead it’s a book with a smart and sassy heroine who brings a lot of humour and sarcasm to the book and a delicious hero who doesn’t dwell too much on his centuries of ghostly imprisonment. Altogether it made it a light-hearted and fun paranormal romance.
Over all I did enjoy the book, but I found the story very slow. Most of the book is taken up with Denny and Nate (the hero) dancing around one another as they fall in love. Which would have been fine but although I liked their romance, especially considering that Nate remained a disembodied voice for most of the book, their chemistry didn’t blow me away. I just found it… nice but not anything that stands out in the genre. In fact, that probably describes my feelings in general towards Styx: it was nice, but nothing that stands out.
Would I read the next book in the series? Yes, it’s a good book to pick up if you want a fun paranormal romance, especially if you are a fan of snarky heroines.
