ARC Review: Laws of Physics 2: Space by Penny Reid

This book continues on from Motion the first book in the Law of Physics serial, so if you haven’t read it, get outta here and pick that up first. In Space we fast forward 2 years in to the future and Mona and Abram haven’t had any contact, but the ghost of their time together haunts them both. Now, Mona finds her peaceful retreat to Aspen disrupted by her brother Leo and his friends. Including Abram. Her feelings for Abram are as disconcertingly intense as they were 2 years ago, but the lies between them seem insurmountable and unforgivable. Can they both survive a week snowed in together?

I really enjoyed Motion the first book in this serial, especially the character of Mona. But, my one gripe about it was that I didn’t feel like I got to know Abram very much, he just seemed like a very handsome and convenient target for Mona to point her lust and affection at. In Space I feel like we got to know Abram so much better and his personality started to take shape as we saw events from his perspective. Is he now my favourite hero? No, he’s a little too emo for my tastes. But I liked the juxtaposition of his personality – someone not afraid to explore their emotions and express them, to Mona’s – someone who purposefully tries to control and mute her feelings.  It’s also interesting that the traditional gender roles are switched as well, it isn’t Mona sitting around and writing poems about her feelings it’s Abram.

And oh gosh, the feelings! There were many and myriad being flung around in this book: love, anger, sadness, hurt, joy alongside a lot of lust, confusion and humour. If your thing is angsty books that take you on an emotional roller coaster then climb on board. Personally, I am not a fan of angst, however, Reid did a great job of mixing the highs and lows of the books with humour so it didn’t become too obnoxious. The only true issue I had with this book which left me hovering between 3.5 and 4 stars is that it very much felt like a repeat of Motion. Abram and Mona stuck together for a week unable to escape? It all left me with a strong feeling of deja vu.

I did enjoy this book though and I look forward to reading the concluding installment in this serial.
