“But although I did enjoy reading ROCK WITH YOU, it was short.”

ROCK WITH YOU is the novella kicking off the new series by Rachel Lacey, Risking It All.  I’ve enjoyed Ms. Lacey’s small town contemporaries before so I’m really excited about a new series.  But although I did enjoy reading ROCK WITH YOU, it was short.  And I think a few things that we missed out on by being so short were more development of the romance and a better setup for the series.

The premise of this novella is always a fun one.  Two basic strangers get stranded in a house during some bad weather, in this case an ice storm.  I had to crank down my AC to read this!  This gets more interesting when one of them is a famous rock star hiding out and writing his next hit album.

I really enjoyed that they had met already once before that day and we already knew there was an attraction on both sides, so it didn’t have that edge of danger with the unknown.  I thought their time together was enjoyable and it was really easy to read.  Overall, I enjoyed what we saw of the characters and their torrid few days affair.  I just wasn’t so sure how that translated into jumping into a full on relationship and I love yous right away.  And I would’ve loved to see them fleshed out a bit more as well.  I know this is extremely hard to do with the page count of this novella, and it’s probably the reason why I usually do so much better with short novellas about a second chance romance.  My brain just can’t wrap itself around this!

As always, I enjoyed the writing in this one and the way I could immediate feel a connection with the characters.  I liked Carly from the very first paragraph and of course, Sam was easy to fall for.  Who wouldn’t with a guy that writes songs about you!  I wish I could say I’m now dying for the next book but I don’t think this was setup enough in this novella.  I do believe the series will be set in Haven, NC and I would’ve loved to see some of those characters bleed through just a little bit here to give us a taste.  Nevertheless, still looking forward to reading it soon!
