“…I know what I wanted; a sweet romance with a slightly weird alien. Luckily that is exactly what I got…”
~ Under the Covers

As a child Macy always loved the sea, however, after a tragic event took her sister’s life, she has avoided it. Instead she takes comfort in the routine of her life and her friends. When she goes to the sea for the first time in years with a friend the worse happens and their boat capsizes in a storm she gets rescued. Only her rescuer isn’t quite human. When Jax saves the human woman, he has no idea of the havoc she will cause not only with the kraken people…but with his own heart.

Tiffany Roberts is my new obsession. I’ve read her Isle of the Forgotten fantasy romance series and now I have moved on to her Kraken sci-fi series. I didn’t know exactly what to expect as I went in blind, but I know what I wanted; a sweet romance with a slightly weird alien. Luckily that is exactly what I got with Treasure of the Abyss.

Lets start with the world, what I liked with Roberts’ Isle of the Forgotten series, apart from the romance, was the world they were building. With the Kraken series, humans were dropped on a new planet and given technology and tools to colonise it, then for a reason we have yet to ascertain, they were abandoned. Fast forward a few centuries and we have the world Macy lives in, which is a balance of a primitive agricultural community and old technology. Although we don’t see much of the village that Macy lives in, I liked the concept and hope they expend it and include it in their future story lines.

Now, we have the reason I really liked this book, the krakens. It’s no secret that I love an alien romance and the more alien the alien the better. Well, it doesn’t get too much stranger than an alien with no legs, but tentacles instead. I loved it. The kraken are a species that were bio-engineered by humans to do grunt work under seas. Humans melded human and cephalopod DNA together to form their very own slave race. The kraken understandabley rebelled and killed the humans who made them and centuries later are still around and living under the sea.

The romance between Jax and Macy slowly grew as their relationship grew from wary adversaries to mates. I loved the build up of their love between them as they got to know one another and over come their obvious and no so obvious differences. I also can’t wait to read what’s coming up next in the series as there are a few other kraken characters I can’t wait to see get paired up.

A great start to this series and I can’t wait to see what happens next, if, like me, you love an alien sci-fi romance than you definitely need to give Treasure of the Abyss a try.
