Review: Tight by Alessandra Torre

I’ve had this on my TBR for so long!!!  I finally gave it a shot and I think the main reason it was sitting there was because I expected it to be similar to Black Lies, which is the one book by this author I didn’t really care for.  And in the end, they probably are quite similar and maybe I should’ve listed to my instincts.

When I started TIGHT, I was immediately smitten with Brett and Riley and their hot Vegas encounter up until maybe 20% or so of the book.  And yeah I said hot.  That is one undeniable fact about this book, the sex scenes are sizzling!  But I quickly lost interest in them as a couple and I don’t think I ever truly recovered that.  Maybe it was because it grated on insta-love instead of keeping up with the more believable insta-lust I thought would be appropriate.  But once they moved past a hook up and into a relationship that Brett was trying to lure Riley into, it just all fell apart for me.

There were so many ups and downs in this story.  One minute I liked it, then it would lose me, then something would catch my interest only to quickly fade away.  I will say this, I think the author was going for unexpected.  I’ve come to expect the twists in her stories, but I’m not always a huge fan of them.  Sometimes they work, sometimes they are just too convenient and not impressive.  Are they always necessary and done right or just added to make the story unpredictable?  TIGHT felt more like that last choice.  Like we were just supposed to have something unpredictable happen because that was what was needed to shock the reader.  This is a pet peeve of mine.  Not being shocked, I love that!  But when that shocking situation is added and it just underwhelms me because it makes it seem like it was added for shock value.

I know I’m in the minority here when I say this wasn’t all that hard to figure out, and the dark subject matter of the twist was not done in the tone I would’ve expected.  I’ve read other books involving this topic (I happen to really like dark romance) and this one fell a bit flat in that regard.  Again, maybe as something that was added because it was being used to play on the “mindfuck” feeling some people might get.  (Gahhh that was hard to write without giving a spoiler so I hope it makes sense!)  Had I cared for the characters more maybe this would’ve worked more for me, but I didn’t.  They just don’t stand out to me.  And if we are going to go dark with a story, then I expect it to dig deep into those feelings and situations.

Overall, this was a miss for me but I know a lot of people enjoyed it.  I will know in the future to stick to my instincts on what I know works for me and what doesn’t.
