“t’s one of the best Cozy Mystery series and each book gets better than the last. Even if you aren’t a coffee lover, you’ll be crazy to not fall in love with these characters!”
~ Under the Covers
First off, I walk to mention the cover of these books because it was one of the things that caught my eye about this series. I love the artwork and how they actually reflect the storyline in someway. It has the fun element but also the slightly off-kilter style that makes readers aware that it’s a Cozy Mystery. It’s definitely one of my favorite covers in the series.
Okay, back to the story. THROUGH THE GRINDER is book two in the Coffeehouse Mystery series. I’ve already read a bunch of the latter books in the series and have only now jumped back to read the earlier ones. I will say that the newer books are more polished and improved. Cleo Coyle’s writing style has definitely improved through the years and the cases have become more complex. That being said, I think that case that happens in this book is a little bit simpler.
Cleo Coyle puts in a lot of scene from the perspective of the Genius who is the villain in this story. I LOVE with authors do this because not only does it give us insight into the bad guy but it adds a hell of a lot of suspense to the rest of the book. Quite a lot of pages are devoted to this, which is a little J.D. Robb in style actually and I really loved this. It’s very easy to figure out the killer in this one because of all the clues laid out. However, I think if you were to listen to it in audiobook, it may be a little more difficult.
There’s a small thread of romance in this book, especially as Clare has now started up online dating. Through this she meets Bruce Bowman, who seems to be a great guy that she has incredible chemistry with but also he is now the lead suspect in a series of murders happening all around town.
If you are not reading this series, I strongly urge you to pick this series up. It’s one of the best Cozy Mystery series and each book gets better than the last. Even if you aren’t a coffee lover, you’ll be crazy to not fall in love with these characters!
