Review: The Roommate ‘dis’Agreement by Leddy Harper

I seem to be in the mood for the friends-to-lovers troupe…at least that’s what Amazon keeps recommending to me. Which is how I ended up reading Leddy Harper’s THE ROOMMATE ‘DIS’ AGREEMENT. I was pining away for Mariana Zapata after having finished her back log and this came up as a recommendation. My expectations was for something light-hearted and funny that would see me through my Zapata withdrawal. That isn’t quite what I got.

Instead of having a light hearted romantic comedy we have a young single mother living in poverty and one step away from homelessness. Until she sees a post on Facebook from a man looking for a female roommate for a platonic friendship. Sounds dodgy? Hell yeah. So our single mum decides to mess with him a little, only the more she talks to the him, the more she begins to think that his offer is genuine and this could be just the opportunity that she needs.

Pretty Women is one of my most hated films and not just because I don’t like Richard Gere. It made prostitution into a fairy tale and just one more step in a quest for your HEA. It didn’t highlight how risky it is to street walk, or how vulnerable women can be. Nope, instead our heroine gets her knight in a shining limo. How does this relate to THE ROOMMATE ‘DIS’ AGREEMENT? It’s the whole risky behaviour thing. If a man is asking for a ‘platonic’ roommate on Facebook and isn’t fussed about the amount of rent you can pay, chances are he’s either a serial killer or a pervert (or both). This meant although I enjoyed this book to some extent I couldn’t quite suspend my disbelief enough to get past the 3 stars mark.

However, although this book wasn’t quite what I expected and I couldn’t quite buy into the story I still liked it. Once I got past the screaming in my head that she was getting herself into a crazy dangerous situation I thought the romance was sweet. It slowly grew as they began to trust one another until finally it bloomed into a romance. It was quite a tame kind of love though and I didn’t really feel much chemistry, beyond the friendship, between them but it was very …nice.

This book didn’t blow my socks off, but I did enjoy reading it, it was just what I was in the mood for at the time. I am also a first time reader of Leddy Harper and I would definitely pick up another one of her books, however, unlike with Mariana Zapata, I don’t feel the massive urge to read her entire back list.  But if you’re in the mood for a slow moving friends-to-lovers read, this wouldn’t be a bad place to start.
