Bianca, the DUFF (Designated Ugly Fat Friend) in question has a lot going on in her life, her parents are acting strangely and may be on the edge of a divorce and an old flame who broke her heart and happens to be her best friend’s brother us back in town. What she doesn’t need is Wesley, the hottest man slut in her school calling her a DUFF. But, what she does need is mindless relief from the tangle of stresses her life has become and Wesley seems just the right kind of person. But as life gets more complicated she never expected to find comfort from Wesley or see much behind his shallow man whore exterior.
I am not a reader of young adult books in general, I don’t really get on with it, honestly the trials and tribulations of teenagers just don’t interest me. But The DUFF caught my attention a while ago and I decided to give it a try…and I enjoyed it, it made me smile and I followed the characters antics with interest, but no real emotional investment, it just didn’t blow me away.
The book is a fairly quick read and although there are no surprises, I imagine that you can tell what is going to happen from reading the blurb, it did manage to hold my interest. I liked Bianca, she wasn’t perfect and like all teenagers she made some poor decisions but her authenticity and irritating cynicism made this book seem more real. It would have been nice to see a bit more of Wesley and to have gotten a deeper feel for his character and although he was easy enough to like, he seemed like cookie cutter bad-boy-with-heart-and-parent-issues character to me.
If you already like the YA genre than I imagine you will like this book more than I did. It was a book with a Message regarding judging by superficiality, be you a DUFF or a hot man slut, no one is entirely the person that they show to the world. It is a nice message that I can get behind, I just found that The DUFF just didn’t suck me in, may be my next voyage into YA will be more successful.
