“…the first part of the book took me a month to get through, the last part took me a day.” ~ Under the Covers

Werecats are a rare and secret species…and Faythe is one of only eight females in the whole race. Not that she wants that responsibility, rebelling against expectations has been her modus operandi for as long as she can remember and espcaping to college, away from her father, the alpha, and her boyfriend gives her some freedom. But, when a stray werecat starts kidnapping the rare females her illusion of freedom is taken away, especially as it looks like Faythe may be the next target.

I am conversely excited and disappointed with Stray; urban fantasy is one of my favourite genres, I love the excitement, the fast pace and the generally more complex story lines and characters.Stray had some of these elements; however, they only seemed to all come together in the last few hundred pages of the book. The first four hundred pages were slow and at times infuriating.

Whilst I was reading the first four hundred pages my thought processes were a bit as follows:

Angel Suzanne: Remember this is the first book in a UF series, they always start a little slowly to build up the world
Devil Suzanne: *Yawn* Has anything happened yet? Oh look Faythe just got even more irritating…I know JUST where to stick this pitchfork
Angel Suzanne: It just gives Faythe room to grow, yes she may be a little spoiled and selfish right now…
Devil Suzanne: By spoiled you mean bitch right? If Faythe doesn’t want Marc I am happy to give his tail a tug. Has anything happened yet?
Reaches the 400 page mark
Angel Suzanne: I am sur- *stares avidly at book and starts turning pages*
Devil Suzanne: Shut up I’m reading!

I do sound a little crazy, luckily these little conversations (mostly) took place inside my head, but these were the thoughts circling through my mind as I was reading. Faythe was a hard character to like, although at times I understood her frustration; she was an independent and capable woman stuck with guys who would fit in perfectly with the cavemen from the middle ages, this didn’t mean that I always agreed with her. And as the book is told exclusively with her voice, it can make it exasperating to read at times.

But, the book did pick up and as soon as events got moving I literally couldn’t put it down; the first part of the book took me a month to get through, the last part took me a day. It was exciting, fast paced and at times very emotional and it had me avidly turning pages as I needed to see what happened next; there was no time for crazy conversations with myself.

I really hope this is going to be the start of a series I can’t get enough of, this book has set up an interesting array of characters and dynamics, which I can’t wait to see developed. It has also created a harsh and fairly ruthless world of the werecats and I am interested to see what Faythe does to carve out her place in it.

  1. I really love this series. I believe this was the first book this author published, so they do get better as they go along. I think you’ll find the later books more enjoyable. Faythe also grows as a character and it has less of a NA feel to it. Great review.

  2. Really good series…there were times I wanted to throw the book…there were even a few times I had to put the book aside because of things that happened. ..there were also times this series put me on an emotional rollercoaster. ..
