“Maybe what I needed was for this to be just a step up in the maturity.  Both of the characters and the story, as well as the writing.”
~ Under the Covers

I’ve seen this book highly recommended around for years!  I recently stumbled across it again and saw it was on KU so I decided to give it a try.  Spur of the moment.  I was interested to see a young adult contemporary that talked about a hero with autism.

I think overall there were things about this book that were good, but I don’t think the execution was what I wanted.  The writing felt a little immature and that distracted me from the story.  And I didn’t really care for our heroine much, which made it harder to connect with this story.

Then there’s Colton.  While I liked his character, it was also very difficult to get to know him because there’s nothing from his POV.  I think that would’ve added a great layer to this story and made it a deeper connection.  I did really enjoy how Lilly had become so important for him basically his whole life, and how much she meant to him.  But I wanted more.

Some things about this story, like I said, are interesting and kept me reading.  I loved seeing the devotion of both Lilly and Colton’s family to making Colton as acclimated and normal as possible.  And to ensure he felt loved.  Maybe what I needed was for this to be just a step up in the maturity.  Both of the characters and the story, as well as the writing.

  1. I loved this novella. This is one of my favorites of all times. It’s been a little while since I’ve read it. Time for a reread! I think that the subject matter is very much written about lately. This novella was a head of the trend by a lot. I highly recommend Puddle Jumping.
