Review: Pretty Girls by Karin Slaughter

I’ve been wanting to read this book for a while.  In fact, I bought it when it came out and then I keep pushing it aside.  When a friend of mine was talking about her books being among some of her faves because of how twisted they are, and how funny and sweet the author is in real life, I just had to move this up my TBR list.  And I’m so glad I did!

PRETTY GIRLS starts very twisty and it only escalates from there.  The main heroine, Claire, is getting busy with her husband in an alley when they get robbed at knife point and her husband is killed while trying to save her.  During the funeral, her house gets broken into and she has the cops and the feds all over her house and her husband’s things.  And while she’s going through her husband’s computer she discovers some brutal evidence that maybe she didn’t know all there was to know about her husband.  When the local authorities discard her concerns, her and her estranged sister work together to uncover the case of what had been going on and what her husband was involved in or not.

This might be one of the most disturbing books I’ve read in quite some time and I loved every second of it!  I will admit if you are squeamish you may want to reconsider this because there’s some gruesome things that go down and/or are talked about in this book.  But it definitely added to the feel of the book.  And while I found the ending to be a little convenient and I’m not sure I bought into the possibility of it all happening the way it did, it was still a satisfactory ending to close out this story.

This story is about more than just uncovering a crime.  It’s about a family that’s been through so much.  From the disappearance of a sister, the drug addiction of another and the suicide of a father.  Their lives had fallen apart and there wasn’t much holding them together.  It was nice to finally see some closure and the hope that they can rebuild their lives from here, with what they have left.

Karin Slaughter’s writing was definitely engaging.  I can’t say I connected deeply with the characters, but they were pieces to be moved along in uncovering the plot.  It was definitely more plot-driven for me, but the author did such a great job at immersing you in the story that missing that character connection didn’t bother me in the least.  I still couldn’t wait to keep turning the pages.  AAnd now I can’t wait for my next read from Ms. Slaughter.  I’ll know what I’m in for.
