~ Under the Covers

This is my first book I’ve tried from Alexandra Bracken and the main reason why I picked up this book was because of the cover. It’s so eye-catching that I wanted to know what the story was about. PASSENGER is a Young Adult novel with a bit of a Fantasy twist.

What immediately striked me about this book is the fact that Bracken doesn’t try to dumb down her writing for the benefit of her younger readers. Her vocabulary and the themes explored in this novel are timeless and suit every age. That was easily my favorite part of this book. It had a bit of an “old story” feel to it, almost as if you’re reading some sort of ancient folklore.

Similarly, the main characters Etta and Nicholas have an old soul quality to them as well. Although they are young, they are mature beyond their age which is why I think this series can interest everyone. I would recommend this story to anyone who enjoys epic journeys and mysteries involving clues.

That being said, this book wasn’t what I expected it to be. I liked the characters but I never quite fell in love with them. Similarly, I liked the writing a lot, but I also felt like some parts dragged on while there were some scenes where I thought it could be cut and become a tighter, more compact story. But this is a saga we’re talking about so I can kind of see where author was trying to go with it. Still, I think I was just expecting something a little bit different. I’ll be reading the next book, WAYFARER, just to see if that one packs a bigger punch.
