PARTING SHOT is just an all around great book and definitely one of my favorite M/M reads this year. ~ Under the Covers
I have Helyce of Smexybooks to thank for introducing me into this series. After she read it, she told me about just how much she adored Duncan and Aaron’s story. Quickly realizing that this was a book I had to check out, I grabbed it and found myself falling in love with this book.
Mary Calmes pens a moving, sexy and romantic story that checks all the boxes for me. PARTING SHOT is book seven in the Matter of Time series, but it’s the first book that I’ve read from this author. I never once felt lost, so I do believe it can be read as a standalone. However, there are a few walk-on appearances from previous characters in the series that I think loyal fans will appreciate.
There are so many things I loved about this book. The first thing is the writing style. I slipped into this story like it was second skin. There was no adjusting, just enjoyment and I found myself flying through this book. I didn’t want to stop for bed. Calmes just hits it in all the right places. The dialogue can be funny. The narration can be sweet. The sex scenes can be steamy and the action scenes suspenseful. PARTING SHOT is just an all around great book and definitely one of my favorite M/M reads this year.
I immediately fell in love with Duncan’s narration, especially how he described this moments with Aaron. From the first page, Calmes is building a romance and she doesn’t take any short cuts. Aaron and Duncan have their ups and their downs, but you still definitely feel the core connection that they both share.
Not the mention that the sex scenes are wicked hot and have a whole lot of heart as well! I was giddy with excitement at finding an author who excels at writing hot scenes while also keeping the heart engaged. I felt like you could feel their passion without being cheesy.
Also, I really loved the details we get about Duncan’s work. It just adds another dimension to an already well-done storyline. It’s quite amazing how Calmes is able to fit all this into one book without having it feel convoluted with so much emotion and information. There’s a great balance here that nicely complements the romance.
There’s absolutely no question that I will be going back to start from the very beginning. I have a feeling that this might become a new obsession of mine.
